Discover Scuba Diving in Puerto Galera!

Discover scuba diving in Puerto Galera

Congratulations to Maria Teresa on completing her Discover Scuba Diving course, pictured here with her instructor Rey.

The PADI Discover Scuba Diving course is a great way to find out if you are comfortable using scuba equipment underwater, without having to invest lots of time or money. The DSD can be completed in only a few hours, and you will have done your very first scuba dive!

Your instructor will spend a couple of hours to familiarise you with the scuba equipment, and basic underwater safety skills, before doing a short session in the swimming pool to put that knowledge into practice. After that you and your instructor will do a shore dive, from the beach in front our resort, where you will experience the wonders of Puerto Galera’s underwater world for the very first time. (under close supervision of course)

Should you wish to take your diver training further, the DSD also counts towards the PADI Open Water Course.

Farewell to Lloyd Rodriguez and his group

From all the staff at Scandi Divers Resort, we’d like to say thanks and farwell to Lloyd Rodriguez and his (large) group who enjoyed a great long-weekend of fun in the sun, and some Scuba Diving training with us.

Lloyd is a Philippines expat living in Canada, and brought his whole family from Canada, and then stopped in Manila on the way to collect his extended family before heading down to Puerto Galera!

The group all did Discover Scuba courses, with instructors Rey Magsino, Edna Brul and assistant instructor Robert Marquez, and Resort Manager/Dive Instructor Terry O’Dowd conducted the Bubblemaker course for Racquel Cincoleon.

We hope you guys had a great time and we all look forward to seeing you again!

We’re back to this..news
Big La Laguna as we know it. Calm clear waters, beautiful sunshine & soaring temperatures, lots of guests & great diving.
But in August we had this!news
For a week we endured impassable beaches, no ferries in or out, very few guests & no diving.
Of course we know that this time of year can be pretty crappy but here in Puerto Galera we’re normally protected from most bad weather.
Typhoon Saola (Gener) passed through the Philippines on the way to mid-China via Taiwan causing massive damage and loss of life in all three countries.
Luckily for us we only experienced a few days of really bad weather & a little bit of inconvenience.
Large areas of Manila & parts of Rizal were affected by the ensuing floods. If you would like to help the victims of typhoon Saola you can make a donation to the Philippine Red Cross at http://www.redcross.org.ph/

Resort Renovations
Power To The People! (Well to our guests anyway).

newsnewsnews

The power project continues as the old Scandi generator is getting a well needed overhaul. The brand new generator is already in place in the all new Gen. House up at Campbell’s and has the capacity to run both resorts during a brown-out. Which of course it better for you! Immediate power for air-con/fans, ref.s/TV’s etc 24 hours a day.
Once the old Scandi generator is fixed up it will also go into the gen. house. It’ll be connected to Campbell’s so the new one doesn’t have to work so hard & we have back-up if needed!

Life’s A Gas!
          news
An unplanned project in August was the death of the dive shop compressor. It started to make some strange noises & Arman noticed that there seemed to be metal filings in the oil – not good! On closer inspection it was determined that several inner parts had come to the end of their life.
So now we have a brand new Bauer Poseidon 220L Compressor. Which for the divers reading this means quick tank fills with very clean air & for Arman it means that we have more full tanks at the ready so less running around!
With thanks to Christian & the guys from Whitetip for installing it.

No not that ET! Esther & Tanya both had big birthdays this year & decided to celebrate in style in the Philippines. Miles hands over the reins to Edz

Goodbye Miles, Hello Edz!
We were sad to say farewell to our dive secretary Miles this month. Miles has returned to Manila to continue her nursing career & be closer to her family. Whilst with us Miles attained her OW cert, helping in underwater clean-ups & playing the victim on a few rescue courses. We wish you good luck Miles & hope to see you again soon for some more underwater fun.
However we say a HUGE welcome to Edna. Edz (or even Ed to Terry!) has recently become a PADI instructor & has been diving around Puerto Galera over the last five or so years. Read more about Edz in the next edition of The Scandal!

Discover Scuba Diving – Guest Review

Discover Scuba DivingEvery day at Scandi Divers, we give people the experience of a lifetime and take them scuba diving in one of the best scuba diivng locations in the world. With almost 40 scuba dive sites, the Puerto Galera diving is absolutely world class.

On a fairly regular basis, we run the Discover Scuba Diving course, a 2 hour program that is designed to introduce people to the incredible world of scuba diving.

We asked one of our recent guests to write about his Discover Scuba Diving experience. Here’s John:

Wow!

That sums up my first scuba diving experience…

I recently went scuba diving with the team over at Scandi Divers.

I had heard a lot about the scuba diving in Puerto Galera before, but I’d never really considered checking it out. That is, until I went snorkelling. After an hour or two snorkelling out the front of Scandi Divers at Big La Laguna Beach, I decided that I had to give scuba diving a shot.

I enrolled in Scandi’s Discover Scuba Diving course.

First, I watched the official PADI video about the course. The video explained basic diving skills, how to stay safe and how to make the most of my dive.

After the video, Terry, one of Scandi’s friendly dive instructors, took me through a demonstration on how to use the diving equipment. He explained how to breathe with the regulator, how to check how much oxygen I had left and how to inflate my BCD (buoyancy control device – it makes you float).

Following the demonstration, we jumped into the pool and practiced with the equipment. We swam down to a depth of 5 meters, floating up and diving down.

Next, we climbed onto the diving boat and went roaring off through the waves to the Manila Channel, one of the famous Puerto Galera dive sites.

We strapped on our gear and fell back into the warm tropical water. I put the regulator in my mouth and prepared for my descent into the underwater world.

It’s very hard to describe what the experience was like.

It feels like you’re going to another planet. It was like another world, with entirely new animals, new colors and new laws of physics.

Scandi Divers Dive ResortAt a depth of around 12 meters, we stopped descending. The current kept us moving through the channel. We passed otherworldly forests of coral and bright alien explosions of color.

Fish swam through the forests, chasing each other and peaking out from their hiding places. On the ocean floor, there were these giant clam-like creatures. Later that day, Terry explained that it was a type of sponge.

We passed by a field of sea snakes. I say “field” because that was exactly what it looked like – a group of seasnakes had poked their heads out of the ocean floor and were swaying in the current like trees do in a gale.

After 40 minutes, we made for the surface and called the boat.

Hands down, this was one of the best experiences I’ve had in a long, long time. I’ll be back for more!

With a certified PADI Scuba Dive center, we have everything you need for a world-class diving experience. Whether it’s your first time or thousandth time in the water, we’ll show you an amazing time.

Check out our Scuba Dive Course Prices for more information.
